Cycle Challenge 2014 - Incredible! A triple plus achievement!

63 riders took part in this year’s Foodbank Cycle Challenge which was exactly triple last year’s figure. Perhaps, having two routes both on flat country roads helped rather than 10 laps of the town which included Somerby Hill !

In the end , 36 riders completed the 45 mile three counties route which went out as far west as Car Colston via Long Bennington and Bottesford and then onto Claypole prior to returning via Stubton, Brandon and Marston to the Belton Garden Centre. The 20 mile route took the 32 riders via Marston, Hougham and Dry Doddington and then back to the start and finish at the Belton Garden Centre.

The weather turned out to be superb: not too hot and much warmer than last year’s August ride when it was cold and overcast.

Warmest thanks to all the volunteers who helped the day go smoothly and to the local businesses and particularly Belton Garden Centre who sponsored the event.

Below the Breadline

Although the UK is the seventh richest country in the world, it is also deeply unequal, and millions of families across the UK are living below the breadline.

Oxfam and Church Action on Poverty have calculated that 20,247,042 meals were given to people in food poverty in 2013/14 by the three main food aid providers. This is a 54 percent increase on 2012/13.

This joint paper by Oxfam GB, Church Action on Poverty and The Trussell Trust is a follow up to the 2013 research report Walking the Breadline. It shows that a combination of changes to the social security system, including a more punitive sanctions regime, a lack of decent work and rising living costs are contributing significantly to food poverty. More and more people are being forced to turn to food banks to put food on their table. Download this report
